Hi All:

I've had a request from Ray Congdon, who is not a Tweeters subscriber, to
ask for some information about a woodpecker problem. This is pretty
interesting, especially after a recent discussion about problems with
flickers. For some reason, I couldn't forward the message, so I'll quote
from the hard copy:

An office building on the I-90 corridor is "skinned in a fairly thin layer
of a concrete material. Under the concrete is a thin layer of dense, foam
insulation. Apparently this time last year, the Pileated Woodpeckers figured
out that the insulation made good nesting material and proceeded to put
about 8 holes in the building, digging it out."
"This year, more woodpeckers have learned of this treasure......"

The head building engineer says the birds are causing extensive damage to
the building and wants to know what can be done; he asked Ray for help. Ray
thought he had heard of a state survey on woodpeckers.
