An ANCIENT MURRELET was seen on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, on
July 26, 45 miles downstream of the Indian Creek Forest Service Station. It
was found by a Nebraska birder familiar with the species. There are several
other ID records for this species which is known to show up in odd places.
This is a remote area only accessibly by river. (ID Delorme p. 52 or 53).

Earl Chapin saw a NORTHERN HAWK-OWL on July 7 at Snow Lake, a
high-elevation cirque basin lake in the Selkirk Mountains of northern
Idaho. (ID DeLorme p. 62, A-2)

A BARRED OWL was along FS 4650 in Wallowa Co., OR on July 19, about 2 miles
from the top of Table Mountain, according to Mike Denny. (OR Delorme p. 87,
A-8)

Steve Lindsay found a pair of THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS on July 22 at a small
burn on Boise Peak in southeast Kootenai Co. (ID Delorme, p. 60, C-3)

On July 28, Shirley Sturts and several Couer d'Alene birders found 2
SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, 2 VIRGINIA RAILS, and a variety of other species along
Kelso Lake Rd. near Athol, ID. Extensive mud at this location could attract
more shorebirds. The location was where the road crosses Hoo Doo Creek,
about 5 miles west of US 95. (ID Delorme, p.62, C-1).

Also on July 28, Tom & Diane Weber found 3 EARED GREBE nests on Texas Lake
and 48 nests on the W side of Crooked Knee Lake in western Whitman Co..
Also present were a variety of shorebirds and 25 BLACK TERNS. (WA Delorme
p. 72 D-1 & C-1).

On July, 31, Rita Dixon, Francis Cassirer, and I, floated the top 25 miles
of the Lochsa River and found 15 HARLEQUIN DUCKS including 2 broods of 8
and 6, and a lone female. One of the broods could be seen from US 12 near
Squaw Creek. Also present were SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, AMERICAN DIPPERS,
kingfishers, and swallows. (ID Delorme pps. 56 & 63).

On August 2, Steve Lindsay found a single SOLITARY SANDPIPER along Hayden
Loop, Canyon Rd, near Cataldo, Kootenai Co. (ID Delorme, p. 60, B-3)

Good Birding!!
