Subject: Vance Creek Park to Ocean Shores

Today, Jim Pruske, Brenda Johnson, and I birded various locations from
Vance Creek County Park to Ocean Shores. We had overcast skies with on
and off showers, eventually turning to heavy rain by 3:00pm. We had a
strong wind all day while birding on the coast. We called it quits at
3:00pm, 45 minutes before high tide, due to stormy conditions, missing
Damon Point and vicinity, and Bill's Spit. Here are some of the high
lights.

Vance Creek County Park:
3 Turkey Vultures
3 Osprey (1 adult, 2 juvs)
1 Cooper's Hawk

Brady Loop Road:
1 White Tailed Kite
1 Red Shouldered Hawk
2 Green Heron
1 American Bittern

Montasano Pond:
1 Osprey

Hoquiam STP:
1 Merlin

Cyber Lake:
50 Greater Yellowlegs

Brown Jetty:
200+ Sooty Shearwaters
3 Brown Pelicans
1 Wandering Tattler
flock of mixed Surfbirds and Black Turnstones

Game Range:
2 Brown Pelicans
5 Western Sandpipers
10 Red Throated Loons
200+ Black Bellied Plovers
1 Peregrine Falcon (flew in and killed a gull on the spit near the
jetty)
1 Bonapartes' Gull
A large flock of peeps, but weather turned us back before we could get
close enough to id.

Ocean City beach access:
300+ Sanderling
500+ Sooty Shearwaters off shore
1 - 2nd year Glaucous Gull

Griffith Priday State Park:
1 Greater Yellowlegs
1 Lesser Yellowlegs
1 Baird's Sandpiper
1 Whimbrel
15 Bonapartes Gull
many California Gulls, Heerman's Gulls, Western Gulls, and Caspian Terns
on the beach.
