Hi Tweeters;
Sunday afternoon, August 12th I spent a pleasant 2
hours checking out the shoreline in south Kitsap
County from Gorst to the Southworth Ferry terminal. It
was fairly warm out, but you bird when you can, right?
At Gorst, at the upper end of Sinclair Inlet I found:
10 Killdeer
9 Great Blue Herons
15 Western Sandpipers
9 G.W. Gulls
At the Ross Creek estuary behind Maria's Taco Shop
there were:
2 Hooded Merganzers
At the Port Orchard Yacht Club there were:
5 Hooded Merganzers
1 Kingfisher
Around the point at Rich Passage and down the other
side, at a beach just south of Manchester:
7 Bonaparte Gulls
1 G.B. Heron
4 Crows - larger than the Bonapartes. (Great for size
comparison)
At the Curley Creek estuary, there were:
3 Kingfishers rackusly diving at each other, perhaps
fighting over the fishing terf.
20 Canada Geese
1 Hooded Merganzer
Out at the mouth of the creek on a sandbar were:
60-70 G.W. Gulls
13 Bonapartes (2 with totally black heads)
2 Killdeer
And overhead were:
3 Cedar Waxwings
1 Bald Eagle
A half mile to the east I found:
14 Bonapartes
8 Killdeer
9 Caspian Terns
20-30 mixed Western and G.W. Gulls
1 Canada Goose
1 Kingfisher
The Southworh Ferry was pretty dead by then. Only some
Barn Swallows.
But the treat of the day came right at the end.
Heading home, I stopped at Long Lake County Park which
was packed with picnicers, but from the fishing dock I
stumbled onto a Green-Backed Heron that I was able to
view for 20 minutes from about 30 yards away. What a
treat!
Thats it. Good Birding;
=====
