Subject: Black-headed Grosbeaks on masquerade

Dear Tweeters,
Catching up on the strand from a week or so ago,
I noticed that a Black-headed Grosbeak was at first
ID'd as a Bobolink. That reminded me of a friend of
mine, a casual birder. As he related to me years
later, he had used his Golden Guide, circa 1982, to
identify a Smith's Longspur at his feeder in Skagit
County, near Marblemount. I was not able to gently
pursuade him that it was undoubtedly a young
Black-headed Grosbeak, although he did characterize
his sighting as his "most credibility-trashing bird."
Yours truly,
Gary Bletsch
