This is Kas Dumroese with the Northern Idaho / Eastern Washington /
Northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, Aug 17 (2001). This hotline,
sponsored by Palouse Audubon, is updated every Friday evening. If you wish
to bypass this recording and simply leave a message for me, including the
date of your sighting and the DeLorme atlas page numbers and coordinates if
you have them, push the star button on your telephone now. Otherwise wait
for the beep at the end of the tape. Please give me good directions, your
fellow birdwatchers will appreciate it.

A PURPLE MARTIN was seen at at Wenatchee Confluence State Park in Chelan
County, WA on 16 Aug by Dave Beaudette. The bird was spotted in a swarm of
about 400 birds (mostly nighthawks and swallows) over the lake off the south
end of the park.

A WHIMBREL was at Kahlotus Lake in Franklin Co, WA on 11 Aug according to
Steve Mlodinow and Dennis Duffy. The lake is just east of Kahlotus along WA
260. WA DeLorme 54, C-4.

Steve and Dennis also had a MERLIN at the Othello, Adams Co, WA sewage ponds
west of Othello. WA DeLorme 53, B-7.

An immature BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON was on a pond 1.5 mile north of I-90
off exit 264, about 20 miles west of Spokane on 10 Aug according to Theresa
Mathis.

A juvenile STILT SANDPIPER was at Hatton Rest Area sewage pond, Adams Co,
WA, today 17 Aug. The rest area is at the jct of US 395 and WA 26 about 20
miles east of Othello. The bird was seen by Craig and Judy Corder. WA
DeLorme 54, B-2.

Two pair of CLARK'S GREBES were sitting on nests this past week at Devil's
Punchbowl on Banks Lake, Grant Co, WA according to Cindy McCormick. The
punchbowl is near the Steamboat State Park entrance which is on the east
side of Banks Lake along WA 155, just southwest of Grand Coulee. Nearby were
at least 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS hunting swifts and swallows at the northeast
corner of Steamboat Rock.. WA DeLorme 85, B-7.

Reports of shorebirds filtered in region-wide. Although no extreme rarities
were reported, the species mix was good. With the front moving through, this
might be a good weekend to go looking.

If you have any questions about birds on the report, call me before 9 pm at
208.883.0943. If you see any of the birds mentioned in this report, be sure
to let me know.

Good birding.
