Saturday, Aug. 18th was an excellent day for birding Whidbey Island. The
East Lake Washington Audubon field trip included Crockett Lake where we
watched a Peregrine Falcon hunt. Fortunately we got good looks at the
shorebirds before the show started. After everything settled down, we scoped
Red-necked Phalarope among the other shorebirds. A Great Horned Owl was
scoped from the parking lot at Fort Casey State Park. There were many
chattering Black Turnstones on the docks and rocks at the Oak Harbor Marina.
Among them were three Surfbirds. At Bos Lake, Swantown, Least Sandpipers
nearly landed at our feet. With a final stop at the Stanwood Treatment
Ponds, we ended the day with a 75 bird specie trip list and three mammals,
including River Otters across the road from Dugualla Bay.
