Tonite I had the good fortune to find the Green Heron again, and this time
scope it for about 30 min. It was skulking among and on the logs and boards
near the cattails on the "house" side of the lake (sorry, don't know my
east/west/etc.). At one point it hunched down, stuck its neck out, and
started intently at the water, maybe 45 seconds or so, then it struck! but
didn't come up with anything (that I could see, anyway). Also, something in
the cattails was bothering it, because it kept peering back and raising its
crest. It almost looked like a Mohawk haircut. The GRHE was kind enough to
give me a good look at its back, front, and both sides. Unfortunately it
was getting close to dusk so it was hard to distinguish the blue-greenness
of its back.

Perched on a log maybe 20 feet from the GRHE was a Great Blue Heron. It was
really interesting to be able to compare the two and see that, although
there're pretty incredible differences between the birds, it'd be hard to
mistake them for anything but herons.

All in all, a satisfying evening, but once again, no peeps. Oh well.
