Reports of a penguin at Bush Point Thursday night turned out to be false,
although by Friday morning rumors were rampant that a penguin had been seen
on the island. After all, with global warming there are some strange things
happening in nature.
But in this case the facts interfered with a good story. The bird was a
Common Murre, so identified with 100 percent certainty by Ann Campbell, a
member of the Whidbey Audubon Society.
In the reference book, "The Sibley Guide to Birds," the Common Murre is
described as "upright and graceful," and, unlike the penguin, it's common in
Puget Sound
