This is Kas Dumroese with the Northern Idaho / Eastern Washington /
Northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, Aug 24 (2001). This hotline,

At Mann Lake, Nez Perce Co, ID this past week were LESSER YELLOWLEGS;
SEMIPALMATED, LEAST, BAIRD'S, PECTORAL, WESTERN, and LEAST SANDPIPERS;
COMMON SNIPE; and a single DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT according to Keith
Carlson KEC201814 at aol.com. From the north end of Lewiston, follow US 12
south into town, cross the Clearwater River on Memorial Bridge and
immediately take the first left (east) toward East Lewiston. Turn left
(east) onto East Main Street and go about a half mile to the flashing yellow
lights. Turn right (south) onto Lapwai (a.k.a. Lindsay Creek) Road. When the
road forks stay right on Lindsay Creek Road (Nez Perce County Road 460) and
follow it about 5 miles to its terminus at Grelle Avenue. Turn left (east)
onto Grelle Avenue and just past the sharp right curve, turn left (east)
onto East Powers Avenue (a.k.a. Lapwai Road). Continue straight (east) past
the grain towers to the main parking lot. ID DeLorme 54, A-1.

At RearDAN Ponds north of RearDAN, Lincoln Co, WA on Aug 18, according to
Dan Stephens dstephens at wvcmail.ctc.edu, were 2 AMERICAN AVOCETS; BAIRD'S
SEMIPALMATED, LEAST, WESTERN, PECTORAL, and SOLITARY SANDPIPERS; 2 BONAPARTE
'S GULLS; and a couple of COMMON SNIPE. Birds on the water included an EARED
GREBE. RearDAN Ponds are just north of RearDAN. From US 2, head north on WA
231. The ponds are just on the edge of town. WA DeLorme 88, C-1.

Also on 18 Aug, and just west of RearDAN, at the Davenport Cemetery was a
nice assortment including 4 OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATHERS, a HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHER,
and 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS according to Dan Stephens dstephens at wvcmail.ctc.edu
The cemetery is southwest of Davenport - look for the grove of trees as you
head west out of town. WA DeLorme 87, C-7.

A breeding plumaged BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER was at Wenatchee Confluence
StatePark, Chelan Co, WA on 20 Aug according to Dave Beaudette
drtbrdr at earthlink.net The bird was on the lawn at the campground. Also
there were 64 FORSTER'S TERNS along the shoreline and flying across the
river to Douglas Co. On 23 Aug 4 GREAT EGRETS were present.

At Swanson Lakes, about 9 miles due south of Creston, Lincoln Co WA, on 21
Aug was a good assortment of migrants, including BAIRD'S, SPOTTED, LEAST,
and WESTERN SANDPIPERS; 4 BLACK-NECKED STILTS; 100+ RED-NECKED PHALAROPES; a
few WILSON'S PHALAROPES; and EARED GREBES according to Cindy McCormack
cbirds at mt.arias.net In that same general vicinity, the small lake (pond?)
along US 2, just east of the turn-off for Miles-Creston Road had a great
deal more mud, and more shorebird activity, including GREATER and LESSER
YELLOWLEGS. WA DeLorme 86, B-4.

A single COMMON TERN was seen in East Wenatchee, Douglas Co, WA on 23 Aug by
Dave Beaudette drtbrdr at earthlink.net The bird was seen from the Loop Trail.
To get there.... From WA 28 at East Wenatchee, head west on 19th Street NW
and follow signs to the Loop Trail parking.

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was in a mixed flock of sparrows near Hooper, Adams
Co, WA on 22 and 24 Aug according to Bob Flores rflores at qosi.net The bird
is just south of the bridge crossing Cow Creek and the bend in the road.
Look for a thin 4' long green grass clump (timothy) on the east edge of the
black-top. The bird is with a mixed flock of Brewer's, Chipping, and
Savannah Sparrows. These birds are forging on the grass clump. Beware, the
birds spook off easily. WA DeLorme 55, B-7.

Today, Matthew Moskwik and I went up the North Fork Coeur d'Alene River to
check on the BLACK SWIFTS. We are happy to report 4 nestlings were present.
