Subject: Montlake Fill habitat issue!

Tweets,
This is an FYI...
Attached are some photos depicting the filling of a wetland at the Montlake
Fill with big, concrete blocks. The fill occurred
over part of what is considered to be parking lot E5, which sits on the
Union Bay Natural Area, managed by CUH. Over the years the parking lot has
been encroached upon by a wetland that UW restoration classes have worked
on. The cause of the encroachment is the subsidence which is occurring in
the fill and peat underlying the Natural Area.

Perhaps you have seen this construction and are concerned about loss or
degradation of habitat. You aren't alone - Prof. Kern Ewing with the
Environmental Horticulture Program at CUH and others have already asked that
it be stopped. Further, the matter has been referred to the proper
authorities within the University for resolution.

I am told that what is happening now is that Weldon Ihrig, the UW Executive
Vice President, is reviewing the situation. If the decision is that filling
can continue, he would probably be the right person to talk with to register
concerns.
