Hi Tweeters,
Last Saturday I saw and learned about the Eurasion Widgeon from Martin Muller at a very windy, variable weather, ELWAS field trip led by Hugh Jennings. Since this bird is often noted on Tweeters, I am guessing it is not all that common here.
I am fairly new at birding, about one year, and I have avoided adding new birds to my book unless I am reasonably sure I can re-identify it the next time I see it. I added the Eurasion Widgeon last Saturday, and I am reasonably sure I saw one drake at Cavanaugh Ponds this morning! The ponds are pretty busy with good numbers of many different species ducks.
After I was there I wished I would have brought my book and made a list for the heck of it. Sockeye salmon are still abundant in the ponds as well, and you can get very close to them.
If anyone would like to verify the Eurasion Widgeon, the ponds are located in the south end between Renton and Maple Valley, just off of Maple Valley Highway (SR 169) at 172nd. Enter Riverbend Mobile Home Park. Park on the left. The park is not marked but you will see a gated dirt road. I saw the Eurasion Widgeon as soon as I reached the pond. It was still in that area when I left.
Also if anyone has any information regarding developement at the ponds I would be interested to hear about it. A large quantity of brush has been cleared after which the ground was coated with cardboard. Why, I have no idea...
