The truth of the matter is Barred Owls are here for good. And I'm happy for
that. No longer just the ole owl from the swamp. The question is why over
the last 40 or so years has the owl from the east coast and deep south cut
westward accross Canada and southward from B.C to N. Cali?? Alot of people
out there in tweeterland are not too thrilled about nature taking it's
natural course. Yes, there are serious problems with the Spotted Owl trying
to survive when many circumstances are keeping it from doing so (old growth.)
If our climate continues to get warmer and we start finding nesting Elf Owls
using Washington's nest holes are we going to label them as a nuisance??
Sounds funny like it would never happen........right? Sure the Barred has
arrived with an attitude. Whooooooo cares!! A small, small percentage of
people actually reading this message have actually been deep in the woods at
3am to enjoy these owls communicate to each other in their own spine-tingling
way. And in most cases (certainly not all cases), these owls are where the
Spotted Owl or their young already cannot survive due to poor judgement by
people. The Barred Owl is opportunistic, not a pest. Bryan Mathews,
