The National Audubon Society today mourned the passing
of Olin Sewall Pettingill, Jr., Ph.D., renowned
ornithologist and teacher. Dr. Pettingill passed away
December 11th in Bedford, TX. He was 94.

Audubon's Director of Science, Senior Vice President
Dr. Frank Gill said, "I mark with great sadness the
passing of Sewall Pettingill.

"Sewall was a great scientist and a beloved mentor.
His work and his personal encouragement inspired the
ornithologists of my generation and infused in them a
love of birds. He shared both his knowledge and his
enthusiasm with colleagues and the general public. We
all will miss him."

Pettingill served on the National Audubon Society
Board of Directors for 19 years (1955-1974). He is
the author of "A Guide to Finding Birds East of the
Mississippi" (1951) and its companion volume, "A Guide
to Finding Birds West of the Mississippi" (1953). Dr.
Pettingill's classic textbook "Ornithology in
Laboratory and Field" (1939) was the longest-lived
textbook of its kind, entering its fifth printing in
1985.

As a filmmaker, Dr. Pettingill produced works on
albatross, penguins, the wildlife of New Zealand, the
wildlife of Iceland, and other topics.
His work can be seen in the popular Walt Disney
documentary shorts, "Nature's Half Acre", "Water
Birds", "The Vanishing Prairie", and "Islands of the
Sea". Dr. Pettingill was also director of the Cornell
Lab of Ornithology from 1960 to 1973.
