Located the bird . . . . just north (100-200 yards) of French Creek bridge,
park on the west side of the road. Bird was in lone leafless tree in large
field west of road.

Long looks in excellent bright light, but we needed 60x on the scope to see
details. It stayed in the tree for a while, then few south and back again
on a pass at some birds to the same tree (level flight). If you use
National Geographic's guide, you really waffle between Gyrfalcon and
Northern Goshawk, but if you look at Sibley's, it's a no-brainer. The fine
bars on the tail help rule out N. Goshawk. It was also hunting in the open,
not in the woods.

I have heard others report that it is there.
Unfortunately I don't believe this bird (or any
gyrfalcon for that matter) exists. I am now 0 for 6
on this bird and 0 for 21 on gyrfalcons overall...
