Okay, here's another non-bird subject for you folks to help me with.......

This morning as I was about to slide my foot into my new slippers something
very small, black, and four-footed scrambled out and under my bed. My cat
took chase and I got glimpses of it a couple more times before it dashed
into my closet. It looked like a shrew of some sort, not a mouse. The
critter had a rather short tail, and couldn't have been more than three
inches long.

What was it and how do I encourage it and its friends to go back outside? I
really don't want to kill it.

Oh, BTW my cat is an inside only cat.
