This is Kas Dumroese with the Northern Idaho / Eastern Washington /
Northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, Feb 2 (2001).

A NORTHERN HAWK-OWL was found today in Klicitat Co WA by Bill and Nancy
Laframboise, according to Mike Denny. To get to the bird, follow WA 14 to
Rock Creek Road. Follow Rock Creek Road 9.3 miles to the
Goldendale-Bickleton Road, and turn right (east) onto it. Follow the
Goldendale-Bickleton Road to Box Springs Road. Backtrack 0.5 mile to where
the bird was seen. WA DeLorme 27, C-5 is where Rock Creek Road heads north
from WA 14. See A-5 for the general location of Box Springs Road.

SNOWY OWLS, probably at least 3 individuals, are being seen in the
Davenport, Lincoln Co WA area. This past week birds were seen south and east
of Davenport. Look for them south of US 2 along Morrison, Ziemer, Omans,
Spinning, Olson, Gravelles, and McLain roads. Many of the road names in the
DeLorme are now inaccurate because of renaming for 911, but Morrison was
formerly a stretch of Detour Road. Also look for SNOW BUNTINGS in this same
general area. WA DeLorme 87, CD-8. Thanks to Warren Current, Jack Alban,
Donna Schluter (sp?), and Brad and Fran Haywood for the updates.

Also in the same vicinity are AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS. Look for the birds in
a farm yard on Thorp Road just north of Espanola and east of Stroup Road in
Spokane Co WA. The mailbox reads W27308. The AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS are in a
mixed flock of other passerines and often respond to pishing. WA DeLorme 88,
D-2.

Two WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were below Lower Granite Dam on the Snake River
southwest of Pullman, Whitman Co WA last weekend according to Joe Lipar.
They were first seen from Illia Landing, which is located a couple of miles
west of the dam on the south side of the river, directly across from the
grain towers located on the north side of the river. WA DeLorme 57, C-5.

A MEW GULL was on the Walla Walla River Delta in western Walla Walla Co WA
today Feb 2 according to Mike and MerryLynn Denny. The delta can be accessed
0.1 mile north of Madame Dorian Park just north of the jct of US 12 and US
730. There's a pull-out along US 12 at milepost 306.9 and a path to the
delta. WA DeLorme 40, D-1.

The Denny's report an adult MEW GULL in Richland, Benton Co WA. The bird was
at Columbia Park along the Columbia River near the public golf course. To
get there, take US 395 to the Columbia Park exit. Also in Richland is an
EURASIAN WIGEON at Leslie Grove Park. Take I-82 to George Washington Way to
Park Street and follow Park Street to the river.

Another EURASIAN WIGEON is at Hood Park, located at the jct of US 12 and WA
124, in northwest Walla Walla Co WA just southeast of Pasco. It was seen
today, Feb 2, by the Denny's. WA DeLorme 39, C-8.

Several notable birds are in the Lewiston ID / Clarkston WA area. On Jan 28
a LONG-TAILED DUCK (aka OLDSQUAW) was on the Clearwater River near the Port
of Lewiston. To see this bird, you may try looking from the levy on the
south side of the river at either of the two parking lots along the US 12
bypass, or by sneaking to the levy near the grain towers in North Lewiston.

Three NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS were at Spalding Park on Jan 20 east of
Lewiston, Nez Perce Co ID according to Rick Welle. Head east from Lewiston
on US 12 toward Lapwai. Just after crossing the river, turn left into the
Nez Perce historical site and immediately turn right, heading down hill
toward the picnic area. At the stop sign, turn left and follow the road over
the bridge to the grove of trees / cemetery / picnic area. ID DeLorme 54,
A-1.5.

Two more NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS were at Swallows Park south of Clarkston
according to Rick Welle and nearby the BLUE JAY that was seen on the CBC is
still being seen regularly just above Swallows Park near the corner of 20th
Avenue and Crestview. Swallows Park is along the Snake River on the south
edge of Clarkston on WA 129. If someone wanted to play a tape there, the
bird would probably pop right up. A house near there has a feeder in the
back yard. WA DeLorme 43, AB-8.

A GREATER SCAUP and a male RED-BREASTED MERGANSER are in the Harrison,
Kootenai Co ID area. On Jan 28 Stephen Lindsay found both birds again. Look
for them near the Coeur d'Alene River delta via Harlow Point Road (first
road heading west after crossing the river when northbound from Harrison on
ID 97) and also around the marina in Harrison. ID DeLorme 60, BC-1.5.

Also in the Harrison area, 2 AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS are just down the hill
from Kootenai High School, which is along O'Gara Road According to Dr.
Lindsay. O'Gara Road heads left (west) from ID 97 just after the ID 3 / ID
97 jct south of Harrison. ID DeLorme 60, C-2.

More AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS, 6 of them, are near the grain elevators at Mann
Lake just east of Lewiston, Nez Perce Co ID according to Bryan Jamison. Also
at the lake is a RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, seen Feb 1 by Jane Westervelt and
today Feb 2 by Bryan Jamison and Keith Carlson. Also there today were 2
DUNLIN. From the north end of Lewiston, follow US 12 south into town, cross
the Clearwater River on Memorial Bridge and immediately take the first left
(east) toward East Lewiston. Turn left (east) onto East Main Street and go
about a half mile to the flashing yellow lights. Turn right (south) onto
Lapwai (a.k.a. Lindsay Creek) Road. When the road forks, stay right on
Lindsay Creek Road (Nez Perce County Road 460) and follow it about 5 miles
to its terminus at Grelle Avenue. Turn left (east) onto Grelle Avenue and
just past the sharp right curve, turn left (east) onto East Powers Avenue
(a.k.a. Lapwai Road). Continue straight (east) past the grain towers to the
main parking lot. ID DeLorme 54, A-1.

A huge flock of SNOW BUNTINGS is persisting in northeast Oregon near
Enterprise, Wallowa Co. Al Winter found the flock that's been reported for
about the last month along Golf Course Road. OR DeLorme 81, C-7.5.
