OK, I found the range of the gilded Flicker in the Stokes guide, and
clearly that couldn't have been a gilded Flicker. It didn't look like
the bird in the Stokes guide at all - more like a local flicher. I'm
embarassing myself by continuing this. Since there was some yellow, it
had to have been at least partly a yellow-shafted flicker. I'm sure I
saw a red moustache, but I didn't write it down, and so I suppose that I
could be wrong about that. Maybe it's one of the intergrades you
mentioned. I haven't been birding much recently because of my bad
knees, and I think it shows.
