Here's another good reason to be in the habit of taking field notes. While we don't like to look away for fear of missing something, we often try in vain to remember the details later. Note-taking can get us into the habit of really _seeing_ birds: top-to-bottom shapes, colors, patterns and sizes -- also behaviors and habitat. It's also a good way to learn how to describe what we see to others and turn the expereince into a narrative.

I have been called a journal junkie, but it's better than kicking myself for my often faulty sense of recall. Besides, I seldom know what I will want to remember, until after I have forgotten it.
