Dave Lauten did not see the Midway Beach bird. It was seen by
WDFW personnel during the Snowy Plover survey in January and
reported to him later.

If I may expose my prejudices...
WDFW personnel (on average) are probably not well versed in
the subtleties of small plover ID. Given the number of Semipalmated
Plovers reported by those who followed up on the initial report,
I think speculation about what was actually seen will have to
remain specualtion....
