The bird described sounds like it could possibly be a Screech-Owl. I
remember maybe about 10 yrs ago I visited another birder's home at night in
the South Sound area to witness an interesting sight. They had been
observing a couple of Screech-Owls that would fly down to the ground in the
backyard floodlights to pick up earthworms. This was really fascinating to
see. The size and sound of the bird described fits into this possibility.
