This is Kas Dumroese with the Northern Idaho / Eastern Washington /
Northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, Feb 9 (2001). This hotline,
sponsored by Palouse Audubon, is updated every Friday evening. If you wish
to bypass this recording and simply leave a message for me, including the
date of your sighting and the DeLorme atlas page numbers and coordinates if
you have them, push the star button on your telephone now. Otherwise wait
for the beep at the end of the tape. Please give me good directions, your
fellow birdwatchers will appreciate it.

SNOWY OWLS, probably at least 4 individuals, are being seen in the
Davenport, Lincoln Co WA area. Look for them south and east of Davenport,
particularly south of US 2 along Morrison, Ziemer, Omans, Spinning, Olson,
Gravelles, Janoff (Janett?), and McLain roads. Many of the road names in the
DeLorme are now inaccurate because of renaming for 911, but Morrison was
formerly a stretch of Detour Road. Also look for SNOW BUNTINGS in this same
general area. WA DeLorme 87, CD-8. Thanks to Warren Current and Fran Haywood
for the updates.

A female LONG-TAILED DUCK was seen Feb 4 by Tim Durnell and Warren Current
at Fort Spokane on the Spokane River arm of Lake Roosevelt near the
confluence of the Spokane and Columbia rivers in Lincoln Co WA. They saw
one, possible two, birds upstream and downstream from the east end of the
bridge. WA DeLorme 87, A-6.

Several notable birds are in the Lewiston ID / Clarkston WA area. An adult
THAYER'S GULL was at Swallow's Park south of Clarkston on Feb 3 according to
Joe Lipar. Swallows Park is along the Snake River on the south edge of
Clarkston along WA 129. WA DeLorme 43, AB-8.

The female LONG-TAILED DUCK (aka OLDSQUAW) first seen on Jan 28 In Lewiston
was seen again on Feb 3 and 4. The bird is on the Clearwater River near the
Port of Lewiston and apparently also in the West Levee Pond. To get there
from the north side of Lewiston, take US 12 across the river and stay in the
right lane past the first traffic light. At the second light (18th Street),
turn right. You may try looking from the levy on the south side of the river
at the first parking lot, or continuing about 0.75 miles to the big pond,
right before the railroad bridge over the river. Three BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT
HERONS are still residing at Kiwanis Park along the levee according to Keith
Carlson who saw them on Feb 4. From the West Levee Pond, continue south and
west on the US 12 bypass until you reach the stop sign at Snake River
Avenue. Turn right. You'll see the sign for Kiwanis but because of
construction may have to go to the next parking area. ID DeLorme 54, A-1.

A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was still being seen at Spalding Park east of
Lewiston, Nez Perce Co ID. Many observers saw it last weekend. Head east
from Lewiston on US 12 toward Lapwai. Just after crossing the river, turn
left into the Nez Perce historical site and immediately turn right, heading
down hill toward the picnic area. At the stop sign, turn left and follow the
road over the bridge to the grove of trees / cemetery / picnic area. ID
DeLorme 54, A-1.5.

Dave Holick and I noted the male RED-BREASTED MERGANSER and 2 DUNLIN were
still at Mann Lake east of Lewiston on Feb 3. From the north end of
Lewiston, follow US 12 south into town, cross the Clearwater River on
Memorial Bridge and immediately take the first left (east) toward East
Lewiston. Turn left (east) onto East Main Street and go about a half mile to
the flashing yellow lights. Turn right (south) onto Lapwai (a.k.a. Lindsay
Creek) Road. When the road forks, stay right on Lindsay Creek Road (Nez
Perce County Road 460) and follow it about 5 miles to its terminus at Grelle
Avenue. Turn left (east) onto Grelle Avenue and just past the sharp right
curve, turn left (east) onto East Powers Avenue (a.k.a. Lapwai Road).
Continue straight (east) past the grain towers to the main parking lot. ID
DeLorme 54, A-1.

BLUE JAYS are being seen in Spokane WA. Sherry Hagen reports 4 birds are
visiting feeders along easy 18th just west of Pines. Matthew Moskwik found 3
birds on Feb 8 nearby at the corner of 20th and Whipple.

A flock of 20 GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCHES were along WA 26 and O'Brian Road
about 6 miles west of Othello, Adams Co WA on Feb 2 according to Bob Flores.
About 2 weeks ago he had a flock of what he thought were Rosy-Finches on
Crab Creek Road in Grant Co WA, about 3 to 4 miles west of this latest
sighting. WA DeLorme 53, B-6.

A single ad WESTERN GULL was at Lower Monumental Dam on the Snake River in
Walla Walla Co WA on Feb 4 according to Andy Stepniewski. The dam is south
of Kahlotus along WA 263. Andy also saw about 20 GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCHES
go to roost in the cliffs along WA 263 (aka Devils Canyon Road) about 4 pm
that day. WA DeLorme 54, D-4.
