Hi Tweeters,
No snow, no rain, no fog... could this really be sun on Spencer Island?
We had a great field trip with 40 some odd species. The Red-shoulder Hawk
was finally spotted at the end of the walk, north of the barns. Thanks to
the group of birders who conveniently had it in there scopes when we showed
up. We did see 2 Virginia Rail, a Townsend Solitaire and some Dowitchers
either Long-billed or Short-billed - flip a coin. LOTS of ducks were
present. I guess hunting season is over. Northern Pintail, American Widgeon,
Green-winged Teal, Common Merganser, Gadwall, Bufflehead, a Pied-billed
Grebe and Mallards were all in the ponds on the either side of the dike.
There were also lots of Northern Harriers, 3 Bald Eagles, a Merlin and
several Red-tailed Hawks. The sewage ponds had Ring-necked and Ruddy Duck,
Lesser Scaup, and Canvasback. Passerines were few but we saw a Brown
Creeper, Kinglets and Chickadees along with Spotted Towhees, Song Sparrows
and Pine Siskins.
A good day.
