Yesterday my dad and I birded around Ocean Shores and Brady. Our first stop
of the day was Elma, where we found 2 WESTERN SCRUB-JAYS in a local park.
Near the park, there were also White-crowned and Golden-crowned Sparrows,
about 20 EVENING GROSBEAKS, several calling BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, and a
female "Black" MERLIN. West of Elma, in a field, were around 40 TRUMPETER
SWANS, and about 15 "DUSKY" CANADA GEESE. Our next stop was Brady Loop at
about 9:00. As we drove up the West side of Brady Loop Rd., about 100 yards
from Monte-Brady Rd., the juvenile RED-SHOULDERED HAWK flew across the road
in front of our car up a small creek and landed in a tree above the creek.
Soon after perching, the bird flew up the creek to the West and after a few
minutes we heard the bird calling in the distance. Also in the area were at
least 7 "Myrtle" YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS and a rufous-morph Red-tailed Hawk.
We then drove to Damon Point, where the weather was quite nasty and the
birds were relatively inactive. The only highlight was one LEAST SANDPIPER
with a small flock of Killdeer. At the Ocean Shores Jetty, a fairly large
flock of Black Turnstones were on the jetty, roosting very near to the
parking lot on the jetty due to the high tide. After a while of scanning
them, a single ROCK SANDPIPER hopped up on a rock in clear view. The birds
continued to sleep on the jetty, even with dogs and people coming very close
to them. No other Rock Sandpipers were seen, and no Pribilof subspecies
either.
After that, we went razor-clamming in the freezing cold, and saw 1
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE while we were clamming at Copalis Beach.
