I have made note of a solitary Green Heron at Capitol Lake, Olympia WA during the entire year. In fact, I was just down there yesterday 02/11/02 and saw it peering into the outflow of a culvert (no doubt waiting for some tasty snack). Perhaps I am extrapolating a bit, but based on where I've seen this bird and its territorial behavior, I believe I am seeing the same individual year round. It is my understanding that Green Heron and Bitterns mostly migrate, but there are a few resident individuals. I believe the pair of Green Heron at Grass Lake Refuge, Olympia, WA is migratory and seems to return late in spring.

Good Birding,
