Please note that the Parrish lab at the UW is seeking a...

SEABIRD RESEARCH ASSISTANT (1) needed starting March 15, 2001 for a
demography study of Common Murres in the Pacific Northwest. This work is
done both in the office at the University of Washington, and in the field
at the Yaquina Head (Newport, OR) and Tatoosh Island (WA) colonies.

Regular attendance counts, monitoring of nesting phenology and responses
to predators, mapping of colony plots, diet studies, and beach walks to
collect dead birds, are all part of the deal in the field. Applicants
should have at least 2 years of field experience, a keen sense of
observation, be able to work independently, and write clear and concise
notes. You should also have a valid drivers license AND a sense of humor!

Collating data and entering data in formatted spreadsheets and databases,
conducting library and computer search work, and performing biological
labwork with supervision, are the main tasks at UW. Familiarity with word
processing, spreadsheets, and databases is essential.

General attributes we are looking for include the desire to work as part
of a team, and an ability to travel for extended periods to remote field
locations. The Tatoosh Island field work involves rustic conditions,
heavy lifting, and occasional nights and weekends. Housing is provided in
Oregon, and the two person team will share a cool little house close to
the beach in Newport.

We will begin reviewing applications on March 5. Send a letter explaining
academic, professional and general interests, curriculum vitae and 3
references (include the name, position, e-mail address and phone number of
referees) to:
