Cascadia Hummingbird Report - 2/19/2001

One of the reasons that I like studying birds is that they
regularly challenge my expectations about how they will
behave. RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS are being reported at similar
latitudes along the coast and in the Willamette Valley.
Apparently, the mild weather has allowed the migration front
to spread out over a broader area. This may explain why
hummingbird densities along the coast seem low.

I received reports from the following areas:

Coos Bay, OR 02-16-2001 47 43.3742752 124.225296
Corvallis, OR 02-14-2001 45 44.571 123.27603
Eugene, OR 02-17-2001 48 44.0021935 123.0793762
Florence, OR 02-18-2001 49 43.98638 124.1031

It should also be noted that as of 1700hr today, 17 Rufous
Hummingbirds have been reported in Oregon for the Great
Backyard Bird Count ( http://birdsource.cornell.edu ).
Unfortunately, there is no way to know who made these reports
or from where.

I also received a note from Dr. Bill Caulder who detected
Rufous Hummingbirds on transects in Sonora, Mexico. He says
he does not expect the main migration to run as early as it did
last year.

Mike Patterson Alas, to wear the mantle of Galileo,
Astoria, OR it is not enough to be persecuted
celata at pacifier.com by an unkind establishment,
you must also be right.
