Subject: Cooper's Hawk; no starlings

Doing some pruning of shrubs from our late unusual Feb. snowfall in
Seattle,
I looked up to see approximately 15 crows harrassing a Cooper's Hawk,
which soared way up there for bit, the crows zooming by but apparently
never
striking it.

Then when the hawk got bored it suddenly turned its head, dove down
rapidly and zoomed off towards Northgate Mall at about 20 feet above
ground,
leaving the crows quite nonplussed. They weakly straggled after it and
gave up.
Impressive dive.

Meanwhile, I've had a good winter at the feeders but I'm mysteriously,
but
thankfully, void of starlings, or almost. Has anyone else noticed a
lack of starlings this winter? Maybe I'm just lucky.
