Well I got out birding locally this morning for a few hours before I had to
get back home and fulfill my obligations of yard work and chores this fine
New Years day.
Ah the new year is upon us, which means the slate is clean and a new start
to the year list, which I thoroughly enjoy. Anyways, I birded around Lois
Lake in Lacey, East Bay Marina and Capitol Lake in Olympia.
My first bird of the year happened to be a GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, so I was
happy to start it off with one of my favorite lil birds.
Best bird of the day was a male REDHEAD in with all the other Aythya ducks
on Capitol Lake. A new Thurston County bird for me, not a bad start to the
year.
Also interesting looking was a RUDDY DUCK with an all white head.

Humor of the day occured while scanning the large duck flock on the lake. 4
ladies walked up to me and quite enthusiastically informed me about 4 "Very
huge Great Blue Herons" up the road. Then another person came by and asked
me if I had seen the Bald Eagle and went on about how it caught a "Seagull"
yesterday! Ah non-birders are so funny, at least they didn't ask me what I
was taking pictures of with my scope or ask how far I can see with it :)

Weather: quite foggy, visibility was quite limited. no wind, about 40
degrees F.
