My personal honoree for bird of the year is one that I didn't see for myself.
I can give it the honor because it entered my backyard on Phinney Ridge. It
was seen by my daughter and son-in-law over the Christmas break. The Anna's
hummingbird they saw is special because of the people recording it and
because it is the first hummingbird recorded in my back garden. Up to now I
have always been skeptical that it would be possible for a hummingbird to
survive even the relatively mild winters in Seattle.
