My experience is not that they all show up at once, but that they
all disappear at once. Usually because a hawk or cat showed up.
I think that once the first one comes back the feeder area must
appear 'safe' to the others and they gradually return.

My first birds yesterday were a flock of about ten robins that decided
that the berries on the flowering crabapple in the front yard
were finally ready to eat and were doing their best to pick them
off the tree. There were also a couple of varied thrush
helping out.
