Last spring, I was all but CHARGED by one coming through the ferns in
the Elwha river valley when I stopped to pish. What a great bird! If
they were any bigger, they'd be dangerous.

And if you think the adults are small...we were coming down from a
couple nights of backpacking on Tiffany Mountain 2 or 3 years ago, and
near the trailhead a pair were flitting around keeping track of 3 or 4
fledgelings, which looked about the size of a good-sized bumblebee.
Between the size and their clumsy, short flights, I can't imaging
they'd been out of the nest more than a day or two. That made the trip
worth getting chased off the ridges twice by thunderstorms!
