This morning Jan Alferness and I birded the West Seattle waterfront. We saw
the usual suspects. We saw a Common Loon and a Red Throated Loon.

Then at Emma Schmitz Park we saw what we first thought was a Pacific Loon.
Upon closer looks this bird had a definite white flank patch near the rump.
The bird swam very close to shore, clearly visible with the naked eye. The
bird dove and came up several times. The white patch was visible at the
water line when the bird was swimming and on each dive was clearly visible as
the rump went into the air. We watched it for about fifteen minutes thru
binoculars and then thru the scope until it disappeared from our view. The
visibility was very good and the water was flat calm. It appeared to us to
be a juvenile Arctic Loon.

Possible? Probable? Comments?
