Ileen, report the banded Song Sparrow anyway. Just because you can't read the
numbers on the aluminum band....I'm assuming it had an aluminum band as
well...doesn't mean the Bird Banding Lab won't know who banded it. A bander
can't arbitrarily color band a bird, he or she must have permission and an
addition to their permit to color band.
In some cases, the bander is told which colors in specific sequences to use.
So please, do report the Song Sparrow. Tell us, too! what color the band was,
how many color bands if more than one (and the colors, ) which leg it was on,
and which leg the aluminum band was on. I'm betting you they'll be able to
tell you who banded it where and when. And thank you for reporting it!!
