I received the following letter from a friend in BC, it seems to me that
Salt Spring Island would be a better place to bird if it wasn't logged off.
I'm not trying to start a controversy, but if our Canadian Tweets are
interested in this you might contact MS. Copps. I imagine us yanks could
too. Also, if there's another side to this story I'd like to hear it. Salt
Spring Island is just off of Vancouver Island just N of the border.

Dear Friend,

Thank you again for your support of the Salt Spring Appeal by purchasing our
"Salt Spring Island Women Preserve & Protect" calendar.

There is another action you can take to help us preserve and protect these
precious lands.

As you may know, there is now a strong possibility for a large part of the
Texada lands, including Burgoyne Bay, the north shore and slopes of Mount
Maxwell, and the south shore of the bay to be included in the new Gulf
Islands National Park. This opportunity is too important to be lost; yet,
for
it to succeed action must be taken immediately.

The Texada Land Corporation has already started logging on the south shore
of Burgoyne, within the broad area of interest for the proposed National
Park. The area being logged includes critical Douglas fir / Garry oak /
onion grass ecosystems -- the protection of which is an integral part of the
rationale for a National Park.

Please write, phone, fax or e-mail Sheila Copps, Minister of Canadian
Heritage. We know that she is paying close attention to this issue.

1) Commend her for her efforts to protect all of Burgoyne Bay, Salt Spring
Island, as outlined in the National Parks Proposal.

2) Urge her to immediately request Texada Land Corporation to defer current
logging activity within the proposed National Park area of interest to allow
negotiations to proceed.
