That master researcher of all things trivial, Steve Speich, once showed me copies original journal
notes he had dug up which documented regular nestings of Yellow-billed Cuckoos in a couple of different
areas in the Puget Sound Lowlands, prior to 1929. Just as Jon mentions, cuckoos appeared to have been
quite noticeable each summer during the first couple of decades of the twentieth century. I think
the notes that Steve Speich showed me were Brown's and, perhaps, Edson's. I remember one set of
notes pertained to Bellingham. I think those were Edson's.

The collection and storage of historic data, field journals, references is such a huge and valuable job.
This request by USFWS will be a good test of how we've done in our information storage and retrieval
capability.
