I just finished reading "Kingbird Highway," Ken Kaufman's
endlessly entertaining account of hitchhiking around North
America during his 1973 Big Year. During that time, with
his gold-painted $20 binoculars and virtually no money, he
managed to see 671 species in every nook and cranny of the
country. He was a 19 year old high school dropout at the
time, yet he managed to impress a good share of the
country's top birders with his dedication and skills.

If you love birding, don't miss this book [though it makes
me snicker at bit at my and others' current affluent
obsession with always having the very best binoculars,
scopes, and tripods!].
