I saw the Hawk Owl yesterday, and want to make a CORRECTION to the
directions below. The address is 8699 Stein Rd. [not 2699]. Otherwise, the
directions below are right.
But that owl moves around a bit near that berry field. The berry field w/
the curved canes is to the east of Stein Rd. South of there Loomis Trail Rd
goes east to Delta Line Rd. Delta Line Rd borders the berry field on the
East.
At about 10AM, some folks observed it in the woodlot at the south of the
berry
field. It was about 1/2 way up some deciduous trees which were near the
blue farmhouse. It was on the outside of a decid tree, on a limb. Then,
apparently it flew to the east. A local told me that he drove over to Delta
Line Rd taking Loomis Tr and observed the owl at noon about 1/2 way up
alders which are out to the east of Delta Line Rd. He was parked south of
the berry field near the woodlot. At 1:25 the owl flew back to the woodlot
south of the berry field and a group of us watched it from Stein Rd. It was
high in a fairly bare fir tree which is behind the blue farmhouse. I waited
from 12:15 until 1:25PM when we finally saw it. It had stopped raining by
then. At
2:10, as we got in our cars, the bird flew again. I didn't see it go. This
is a striking bird.

These are the directions I followed (from a 1/18/01 Tweeters post), but
please note that it is 8699, NOT
2699.

Go north of Bellingham to the Birch Bay/Lynden Rd. Go east to the Stein Rd
(2 miles at most). Go north to 2699 and park at one of the entries to the
berry field across the road (east). The bird is usually southeast of the
berry field high in the trees. A scope is a must, unless you're one of the
lucky ones to see it on the telephone pole just north of 2699. I got
"permission" from the property owner of the grove of trees to walk aroung
the south end of the berry field to get close. Get close I did--coolest owl
I've ever seen!
