This is Kas Dumroese with the Northern Idaho / Eastern Washington /
Northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, Jan 26 (2001). This hotline,

A male LONG-TAILED DUCK (formerly Oldsquaw) was again (still?) in the
Columbia River at Kennewick, Benton Co WA on Jan 20, specifically at
Columbia Park according to Craig Corder. The bird was underwater 90% of the
time. Due to road construction in the park, the only access on Jan 20 was
from WA 240, then north on Columbia Center Road, then right 1 mile on
Columbia Park Road. This area is less than 2 miles down river from Bateman
Island. WA DeLorme 39, BC-7.

The BLUE JAY that was seen on the CBC in Clarkston, Asotin Co WA is still
around according to Carole Vande Voorde. It has been seen regularly just
above Swallows Park near the corner of 20th Avenue and Crestview. Swallows
Park is along the Snake River on the south edge of Clarkston on WA 129. If
someone wanted to play a tape there, the bird would probably pop right up. A
house near there has a feeder in the back yard. WA DeLorme 43, AB-8.

Another BLUE JAY is in Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai Co ID at the home of Stewart
Smith. Stewart lives along Apaloosa (sp?) Road just west of Atlas. His phone
number is 208.665.0518.

A THAYER'S GULL was in Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai Co ID on Jan 21 according to
Stephen Lindsay. The bird was on the Spokane River at North Idaho College.
To get there from the intersection of US 95 and Northwest Blvd on the south
end of CdA, take Northwest Blvd southeast about 0.5 mile and turn right onto
Lincoln Way. Go one block and turn right onto River Avenue. Follow River
Avenue about 0.25 mile to Rosenberry Drive which runs along the top of the
dike along the river. See A Birders' Guide to Idaho p. 50 and ID DeLorme 60,

A BURROWING OWL was spotted Jan 21 in Othello, Adams Co WA by Bob Flores and
Randy Hill. The bird was immediately south of Scooteney Springs Elementary
School near Cemetary Road off south 14th.

A SNOWY OWL was just east of Davenport Lincoln Co WA according to Fran
Haywood. The bird was south of US 2 along Morrison Road at the intersection
with Ziemer Road and west of Gravelles Road. It has been seen on orange farm
equipment on the north side of Morrison and also sitting on the ridge line
on the south side of Morrison. This bird was seen by Laurinda Anglin last
weekend. WA Delorme 87, D-8. Many of the road names in the DeLorme are now
inaccurate because of renaming for 911, but Morrison was formerly a stretch
of Detour Road.

SNOW BUNTINGS are persisting along Detour Road, and south of Detour Road
along Oman Road, just east of that Snowy Owl location and also along the Old
Sunset Highway between Mondovi and Bald Ridge Road. Another SNOWY OWL was
along Old Sunset Highway just west of Mondovi Road last weekend according to
Charles Swift. WA DeLorme 87, C-8. Also in the same vicinity are AMERICAN
TREE SPARROWS. Looks for the birds in a farm yard on Thorp Road just north
of Espanola and east of Stroup Road in Spokane Co WA. The mailbox reads
W27308. The AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS are in a mixed flock of other passerines
and often respond to pishing. WA DeLorme 88.

A RED-BREASTED MERGANSER continues to be seen at Harrison, Kootenai Co ID.
Fran Haywood and Joyce Alonso found the bird on Jan 23 just south of the
marina along Lake Road. Harrison is on the east side of Lake Coeur d'Alene
along ID 97. ID DeLorme 60, C-1.
