My wife and I visited the Ridgefield N.W.R. in Clark County on
July 3. We saw three downy headed juvenile AMERICAN BITTERNS and two
adults, these birds were in four separate locations. We spent some time
watching the BLACK TERNS and are fairly certain that they are nesting
here. One bird would spend a considerable time flying over the marsh
gathering food and then return to one spot in the flooded grasses and set
down. We watched it return to that spot three times in a time span of
about a half of an hour but could not discern an actual nest or if the
bird was carrying any prey items.
