Tuesday, 3 July, 9:59 PM. Hi, this is Stephen Mlodinow. A belated report
for the weekend of June 30 to July 1. In eastern Washington mainly Walla
Walla County with Kevin Aanerud. On June 30 the highlight was a GREEN-TAILED
TOWHEE. This was singing 7.1 miles up South Coppei Creek Road from its
intersection with Walker. If you get to a cattleguard, you've gone 0.65
miles too far. Turn around. Coming from Walker, the area is on your right
across a field with some young pine trees growing up. The bird was singing
from these pine trees as well as a strip of older taller conifers. Other
highlights included, a couple of CORDILLERAN type FLYCATCHERS above the
South and North Fork of Coppei Creek. These birds seemed to call and sing
like fairly typical CORDILLERANS. Also present were several PACIFIC SLOPE
types. These birds were perhaps less typical for their taxa and sometimes
were confusingly intermediate. There were vast numbers of birds up Coppei
Creek. Some of the highlights included: 100 LAZULI BUNTINGS, 64 BLACK-HEADED
GROSBEAK, 68 WESTERN TANAGERS and 65 MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLERS.
At Iowa Beef on both Saturday and Sunday there was a SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPER and at Iowa Beef Ponds on Saturday there was a SOLITARY
SANDPIPER. On July 1 there were 2 COMMON TERNS at the ponds at McNary
National Wildlife Refuge along 12. There was also an injured TUNDRA SWAN
still on Dodson Road.
Otherwise there were several birds notable for their absence. This
included TRICOLORED BLACKBIRDS at the Wilson Creek Pond, WHITE-FACED IBIS at
Kahlotus Lake and EASTERN PHOEBE at Leavenworth. That's it. Good luck and
good birding.

Wednesdy, 4 July, 10:29 PM. Paul Hicks here, (360) 264-2462, reporting
for Tuesday, 3 July. An update on the REDSART east of Tenino. I've been gone
for a week and could not find the bird which had been previously sitting on
a nest, so I'm not sure of its whereabouts. But that's the latest. Good
luck.

Thursday, 5 July, 7:37 AM. Hello, this is Scott Atkinson with a report
for yesterday July 4 out of Skagit County. I had a few good birds up there.
Starting at Cascade Pass right at first light. This is on page 111 of the
DeLorme Atlas, A8. At Cascade Pass, right around 7 to about 8 in the morning
I had one female PINE GROSBEAK, 2 GRAY-CROWNED ROSY FINCHS, a male CASSIN'S
FINCH among various other more typical montane birds. Also about half way up
the 3.7 mile trail, I had a CHIPPING SPARROW.
Then down near Marblemount, at the County Line Ponds, I had a pair of
AMERICAN REDSTARTS. There was possibly a third bird here, but I wasn't
certain. Also another AMERICAN REDSTART was on territory near Baker Creek
Road at the River Access. I believe this is called Copper Creek right along
the Skagit River to the northeast of the Baker Creek Road. At Marblemout
itself, I had an EASTERN KINGBIRD at the residence which is immediately
south of the Ranger Station up Ranger Station Road. At Corkdale Power Line
Crossing right along Route 20, there was one active WESTERN KINGBIRD. Down
at the Steelhead Park in Rockport, right along the Skagit River, there were
2 BANK SWALLOWS. Also I had a couple of CASSIN'S VIREOS at the Ross Lake
Recreation Area Sign right along Route 20. This is about midway between the
County Line Ponds and Marblemount itself. Also good numbers of RED-EYED
VIREOS, as usual throughout this corridor of the Skagit River Drainage.
That's all.
