This is Dave Holick with the Northern Idaho / Eastern
Washington / Northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, July 6,
(2001). This hotline, sponsored by Palouse Audubon, is updated every
Friday evening. If you wish to bypass this recording and simply leave a
message for me, including the date of your sighting and the DeLorme
atlas page numbers and coordinates if you have them, push the star
button on your telephone now. Otherwise, wait for the beep at the end
of the tape. Please give me good directions, your fellow birdwatchers
will appreciate it.

A late report of three FLAMMULATED OWLS being found in Kittitas Co WA on
the night of June 28 was made by Charlie Wright. The owls were heard
along FR 9712 north of Liberty, WA DeLorme page 66, BC-3.

A singing GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was found last weekend in Walla Walla Co,
WA by Kevin Aanerud. The bird was found 7.1 miles up South Coppei Creek
Rd from its intersection with Walker Rd. Coppei Creek just north of
Dixie, Walla Walla Co WA. The road heads east off of US 12 east of Dixie
near the big grain tower with the word ?Stella? written on it. WA
DeLorme 41, CD-7.

A bird now tentatively identified as a TRICOLORED BLACKBIRD was reported
by Charles Swift. The bird has been seen periodically for two to three
weeks in Latah Co, ID coming to a feeder in the yard belonging to Terry
Gray in Genesee, ID. DeLorme 58 below C-1. Terry lives at the end of Fir
Street (the house with the wooden mushrooms in front). The feeder is
behind the house and is easily visible from the road or small gravel
parking lot. Be prepared to spend some time waiting for an appearance.

Continuing reports of NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH and AMERICAN REDSTART include
this week?s report of both species in Stevens Co WA by Ted Kenefick. The
birds were located northeast of Colville WA DeLorme 118 CD-2/3. The
birds were found along the South Fork Mill Creek Rd at its intersection
with Hanson Springs Rd.

These same two species were reported by Ryan Shaw in Pend Oreille Co WA
DeLorme 119 D-6 (bottom of page) at Panhandle Campground on the east
side of the Pend Oreille River. While birding along Leclerc Creek Road
north from the campground to Sullivan Lake he also found WARBLING
VIREOS, RED-EYED VIREOS, and CASSIN?S VIREOS.

Reports from around the region of migrant shorebirds are being seen. A
LESSER YELLOWLEGS was reported June 30 by Dennis Rockwell at Two Rivers
County Park, Benton Co WA, DeLorme 39 C-8. The bird was on the exposed
mudflats in the marsh in front of the wildlife observation blind along
the nature trail.

Both LESSER YELLOWLEGS and GREATER YELLOWLEGS were seen at Mann Lake,
Nez Perce Co ID on July 4 by Keith Carlson. He also reported seeing
WESTERN SANDPIPERS, BAIRD?S SANDPIPERS, and an AMERICAN AVOCET at the
lake. On July 1, Joe Lipar saw a BLACK-NECKED STILT here. To get to the
lake, from the north end of Lewiston, follow US 12 south into town,
cross the Clearwater River on Memorial Bridge and immediately take the
first left (east) toward East Lewiston. Turn left (east) onto East Main
Street and go about a half mile to the flashing yellow lights. Turn
right (south) onto Lapwai (a.k.a. Lindsay Creek) Road. When the road
forks stay right on Lindsay Creek Road (Nez Perce County Road 460) and
follow it about 5 miles to its terminus at Grelle Avenue. Turn left
(east) onto Grelle Avenue and just past the sharp right curve, turn left
(east) onto East Powers Avenue (a.k.a. Lapwai Road). Continue straight
(east) past the grain towers to the main parking lot. ID DeLorme 54,
A-1.

A report of 16 WHITE PELICANS at Cow Lake on July 5, Adams Co WA DeLorme
71, CD-7 was received from Gail Fields.

On July 4, Rolan Nelson was unable to find the WHITE-FACED IBIS which we
have been reporting at Kahlotus Lake, Franklin Co. WA DeLorme page 54,
C-4. They were last reported by John Rogers on June 30, when he saw five
birds feeding at the west end of the lake.

Good birding.
