Our Violet Green Swallows have fledged four (! last year zero) and now is the best time to be a VG Swallow landlord. Most of the worrying is over and now we see them early in the morning?collecting on the wire outside the house ---after which they take off for the whole day. Then it?s wonderful to have the whole family show up again as the sun is going down, at around 7 this night, congregating on the wire before the parents usher the kids back in the box again. One of these evenings the parents won?t bring them back home and pretty soon they?ll be heading to Mexico. Our Barn Swallows had a fit when the VGs were fledging, there were so many VGs everywhere and they would often fly toward the Barns (whose nest is only 3 feet from the VG box), only to get beat up. The Barns may only have one kid, which we are thinking and hoping is not a Cowbird, and they?re well behind the the VG?s schedule. A lot of things drove the Barn Swallows to get alarmed this season, not the !

ast of which was a Coopers Hawk that an extremely agitated Barn Swallow escorted out of the neighborhood.
