I had a wonderful two hours at Narbeck Wetlands in South Everett this
morning, starting at 5:30 AM. The place was buzzing with fledglings. My
highlight of the morning was seeing a Virginia Rail and its little bitty
black downy baby wandering through the marsh along the main trail. The
funniest (or saddest) sight was a cowbird fledgling following and nagging a
Wilson's warbler for food.
The redwing blackbird younglings were the most predominant species,
but I also saw Bullock's oriole fledglings, black-headed grosbeak fledglings,
black-capped chickadee fledglings, marsh wren fledglings, common yellowthroat
fledglings, northern flicker fledglings, two brand new families of mallards,
and a yellow warbler fledgling -- all with parent(s) nearby. Three green
herons were present and a great blue heron did a flyby.
Two mornings in a row now I have heard a low, throbbing drone from one
end of the main pond. I was very patient and still but had no luck seeing
what was making the noise. (Sigh.) It's driving me crazy.
