Moon Travel Handbooks' "Montana Handbook" makes for a good companion
volume to Terry's birding book -- lots of good tips on lodging,
camping, general natural history, local culture, even a bit on
birding. (I've found Terry's book to be very good.)

And do heed warnings about staying off wet dirt roads and avoiding
them if there's even the threat of rain. Montana gumbo mud is
everything the legends have to be. Even four wheel drive will not
help much after a serious rain. Or, just pack plenty of food and
water and be prepared to wait until the roads dry out.
