Subject: Rocky Point Bird Observatory - Call for Volunteers

Rocky Point Bird Observatory in Victoria is looking for volunteers for the
2001 banding season which runs from mid-July to mid-October.

Rocky Point Bird Observatory (RPBO) is one of 20 member stations of the
Canadian Migration Monitoring Network (CMMN) and one of two in the province=
=2E
The station relies on public and volunteer support to operate. The RPBO
mission is to protect biological diversity and ecosystem integrity in
British Columbia. RPBO encourages public participation to increase
understanding and respect for ecological values and promote responsible
behaviour towards nature.

RPBO promotes habitat conservation by providing a "hands-on" approach to
species conservation as a partner in an international effort to monitor bir=
d
populations, adding information to a national database, and increasing
general public awareness through regular publication of migration monitorin=
g
results.

Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks of varying durations:

a.. to do the daily census on a regular or occasional basis (early in the
morning=97you should be able to identify at least 50%, and preferably 75% o=
f
the birds in the area by sight and call),
b.. scribing (recording details of banding data as directed by the bander
in charge)
c.. data entry and proofreading (may be done off-site)
d.. general support (phoning, errands, photocopying, etc.)
e.. general birding observations (raptor watch, sea watch, general
observations)

Those who are interested and are prepared to commit sufficient time to RPBO
may also receive training in bird banding.

Volunteers get the opportunity to bird in one of the best, and least
accessible birding spots in the region. Rocky Point is on DND land and is
only accessible to those with permission. The raptor season in September
and October is especially spectacular. Over 1300 Turkey Vultures have been
seen in a single day.

If you would like more information, or to volunteer (even for just a day or
two over the season), please visit the RPBO website
(www.islandnet.com/~rpbo) or call Rick Schortinghuis at 652-6450. If you
prefer to reply directly to this email, your message will be passed along.
