Hello Tweeters,
Carol Schulz and I birded the Ocean Shores area yesterday (July 15th),
recording 97 species. Our first short stop of the day was at Mud Bay near
Olympia, where we saw 2 Greater and 1 Lesser Yellowlegs. A WESTERN SCRUB-JAY
flew above I-5 in this same area. The rest of the day consisted of the
following stops with the following highlights:

Hoquiam Sewage Treatment Plant
1 female NORTHERN PINTAIL (very early)
3 Gadwalls
On the beach near the sewage plant were:
75 Western Sandpipers
1 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER
15 Least Sandpipers

Ocean Shores (Pt. Brown) Jetty
3,000 Sooty Shearwaters
500 Rhinoceros Auklets (surprisingly large numbers)
200 Common Murres
1 MARBLED MURRELET
1 Brown Pelican
1 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE
2 HERRING GULLS
60 Heerman's Gulls
1 COMMON LOON (very early)
1 Dall's Porpoise

Damon Point
Almost no birds at all. Exceptions included 1 Greater Yellowlegs (flying
over) and 3 Least Sandpipers and the "pond."

Bill's Spit at Low Tide (very large numbers of shorebirds were encountered

Large numbers of hummingbirds were observed feeding in the extensive
blackberry bushes as you walk in to the bush. Most of these birds were
presumably migrating, and during the time that I was there, I watched at
least 3 of the birds fly out to sea until they disappeared. Hummingbirds
included:

5 ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS
