If you are driving to San Francisco via I-5 / I-80, just start watching for
them anywhere south of Redding. They are common through much of the Valley
and often seen from the highway. Sometimes a few, sometimes a lot, but
always some. Any Magpie seen anywhere along that otherwise long flat rather
boring stretch will be Yellow-billed. When I am 'mainlining' through there I
sometimes keep a one of those little clicker 'tally whackers' in the front
seat just to click off magpies for lack of anything better to do.
