A little late but went camping from Sun the 15th to wed the 18th at Lake
Ozette. Birded the area very thoroughly and did not see or hear the Northern
Parula. But did see a N. Pygmy Owl being chased by song birds near the
parking lot and in the evening alot(about 100) common nighthawks flying along
the stream. Half were at tree top level and the other half were at about 30
ft off the stream. Also many Common Yellowthroat, Wilson, and Yellow
warblers. Took the hike to the beach where there was Western Sand pipers,
Whimbrel, Wanderling Tattler, Black Oyster Catcher. Then off to Cape
Flattery where I counted at the least 20 Tufted Puffins just below the
observation platform. Also Pigeon Gullimont, common murres, and Pelagic
cormorants nesting on the cliffs in front of me.
One last note not related to the above but in regard to the Yellow Billed
Magpie. I used to live and work for the parks dept. in the East Bay. The
closest spot from San Fransico is Sunol Regional Wilderness park above
Livermore or in the Tracy, Modesto, Stockton area in any of the side roads
thru the farm areas will produce many yellow and black billed magpies.
