This morning (Saturday, 7/21) I birded Weir Prairie near Rainier in hopes of
seeing/hearing a NORTHERN BOBWHITE. I saw one bird and heard others from
the burned scot's broom north of the firs in the middle of the prairie.
There were also at least 12 PURPLE MARTINS. The martins were visiting 3
nest holes. I also had a male WESTERN BLUEBIRD at the prairie.

Feeling lucky, I headed to Jetty Island in Everett in the afternoon hoping
to see the LITTLE GULL that Gene Hunn reported a couple of weeks ago. I
took the 2:30 ferry and from 3:40 to 4:40 I watched the LITTLE GULL. It was
in the company of about 20 Bonaparte's Gulls and at times, 3 COMMON TERNS.
These birds were north of the lagoon near the north end of the island. At
one point the incoming tide brought the LIGU within 10 feet of me! This
bird is LITTLE. It looked similar to Sibley's 1st summer bird, but at close
range the dark pattern on the wings is not black, but brown. I looked for
but did not find ARCTIC TERNS.

Still, it was a good day.
